*Please note that an update to the 2025–2026 school year calendar has been approved that will affect middle school students only. Derby Middle School will no longer need Wednesday, February 25, 2026, as a non-attendance day, and Derby North Middle School will no longer need Wednesday, March 4, 2026, as a non-attendance day. Both dates will now be regular student attendance days.
Previously, these were identified as non-school days for only middle school as our schools were set to host league music festivals. The Wichita Suburban League has recently agreed to combine divisions for the league music festivals and relocate the events to Kansas Wesleyan University (KWU). This change will continue to provide our students with the opportunity to perform for judges, receive valuable feedback, and experience a college campus. KWU will assume responsibility for organizing the festival, including securing judges, scheduling performance times, and managing other event logistics. Because of the change in venue, a change to the previously approved 2025-2026 school year calendar has been made.
Please note, each elementary school and Derby High School will begin their school day five minutes earlier this school year. Please see page 2 of the calendar for building start and end times.
The school start time was adjusted by five minutes to maximize student attendance, instructional time and efficient teacher work time. This change helps eliminate two half-days that are typically scheduled at the secondary schools at the end of the first and third quarter, which often have lower attendance and allows for a full week off at Thanksgiving for all schools, another period with lower attendance due to family travel. Middle school start times remained unchanged since they already met the instructional minutes needed. Additionally, this change helps provide additional meaningful teacher work time to prepare for student learning.
